ISOTECH’s director, Dr. Xenia I. Loizidou, participated in the Littoral 2022 conference, and presented the work that ISOTECH is doing within the SEALIVE project to bridge the gap between end-users and scientific knowledge and research to combat ghost nets, through the development and testing of alternative, more sustainable fishing nets. Dr. Loizidou presented the methodology that is being implemented with the project to engage with fishers in order to develop bio-based, industrially compostable, and biodegradable fishing nets, from requirement definition, to testing the final products in real environments in Cyprus and Patagonia, to gathering feedback on economic and social acceptability of the new nets. Conference participants were very interested, both in the methodology and the final products developed by SEALIVE, and recognized the importance of finding suitable alternatives to combat ghost nets.
